MY STARBURST

My Starburst saved me. Risked her life to save mine.

It all started on Christmas Eve. Me and my family were opening early Christmas presents, and I went outside to get some fresh air.

It was a cold and brisk night. The stars shown down on me. I’ve always liked the stars. You never know what it’s like up there. Or what’s up there.

I was watching the stars and suddenly... one of them started to fall. It was falling and oddly shaped.

And it was right on top of me.

I stumbled backwards as it crashed down I front of me. The smoke from the crash blinded me for a moment.

Coughing, I slowly rose to my feet, peering at the glowing star. Except... it wasn’t a star. It was a girl.

Her long wavy hair glowed a shimmering golden. She was wearing a black dress with white stars and galaxies splattered onto it.

She stood up, and looked at me. Her eyes sparkled like a thousand universes.

     I stammered. “What...what are you?”

She blinked at me and stardust seemed to fall off her eyelashes. “I’m Luna, earthling.” “Earthling?”

“This is earth, correct?” She smiled at me, glowing. Figuratively and Literally.

     “Yes... it is.”

She introduced herself as a StarBurst. A StarBurst watches over their ‘human’ and comes down to save them when they are in dire need of help.

And Luna is my StarBurst. She said that she was here to save me when a shotgun went off.

I turned around to see a man walking through my house. The man had a gun and was pointing it at my family.

Luna called after me, as I burst into the house and in front of the gun.

“Take anything! Just leave them alone!” The burglar sneered at me and cocked his gun.

Clenching my fists, I held my arms out ready to be shot. The gun went off. But when it did, there wasn’t a bullet shot into me.

Except, Luna stood in front of me, her arms spread wide open, gasping.

Unforgiving blood dripped from the hole in her stomach.

“LUNA!” I caught her as she fell backwards.

Luna held her hand up to the burglar and said in a soft of commanding voice, “leave this family and never come back.”

Then he was gone. Disappeared into thin air.

Luna looked up at me, smiling. “Have a good and fruitful life, earthling.”

Then her body shivered and dissolved into stardust. The stardust floated up through the window and into the sky.

My StarBurst had saved me. And I hope they will save you someday too.

Still Not Alone

I ran into my room and slammed the door behind me. I don’t bother turning the light on and lean against the door, sweat dotting my spine and forehead.  Downstairs, I hear my step-dad and my mom yelling. I bite my tongue and hold back the tears.  Finally, I turn on a lamp and soft yellow light, brightens the room.  My baggy tired eyes observe the room; clothes hanging out of drawers, papers scattered on the floor, trash overflowing.  Taking a few deep breaths and trying to ignore the shouting downstairs, I run my fingers through my unbrushed hair and make my way to the only clean spot in my room; a desk that sits next to a window.  On the desk, sits a single laptop, and although it’s old, at first glance one would assume it was brand new. And that’s because I’ve kept it that way.  I pull out a chair and before sitting down in it, I brush extra crumbs off the seat. I pull up to the desk and I stare down at the laptops surface, hands hovering over it.  A ...

YOURE A MOUSE, AFTER ALL

It was dark. Moist. Small. But you are used to these things.       You’re a mouse, after all.       You skitter along the inside of the wooden cupboard, your small padded feet, making you incredibly quiet.       Nose twitching, the delicious smell of cheese reaches you. Heading in that direction, you slip through two cans of jam and climb over a bag of bread.       Right as you jump off, you hear the footsteps of a human.       Freezing, you stand still, listening. The footsteps recede and you sigh, skittering across to find the cheese.       Of course, you find it. In the corner, silky and delicious as ever. It wasn’t hard to find.       You chew on the edges of the cheese, in the dark, moist, cupboard. But it doesn’t bother you. You’re a mouse, after all.

THUNDER

Thunder.  The boat rocked back and forth as thunder lit up the booming sky.       More thunder. Alex, a fifteen year old boy, pulled his sailor hat over his head, trying to block out the bullets of rain attacking them.       With his other hand, he gripped the wet and grimy railing with all his strength. Why had he gotten on this boat? Why had he agreed to take the job?        Because he was desperate. He had to get some money to get home to his family. But now he may never see them again.       More thunder.        “ALEX, BE USEFUL!” Someone bellowed into the boy’s ear, making him jump.        The sailor grabbed Alex’s arm and started to drag him down some stairs, that led into the bottom half of the boat.        “We’re going down there?!” Alex cried in terror, as he got dragged into darkness below the deck.  ...
